“Surrogates Only Do This for Money” — Why That’s Simply NOT True

It’s one of the most common — and most unfair — assumptions people make about surrogacy: “Surrogates are just in it for the money.”
At ACRC Global, we work closely with women who choose to become Surrogates. We’ve seen firsthand that the real story is far more beautiful and heartfelt. Most Surrogates are motivated by something much deeper than financial compensation. Their reasons are emotional, altruistic, and deeply personal.

What is a surrogate?
Surrogacy is more than a medical process—it’s an act of love and human connection. It’s a journey where a woman, known as a Surrogate, carries and gives birth to a child for someone who dreams of becoming a parent but cannot carry a pregnancy themselves.
For many Intended Parents, surrogacy is a chance to hold the baby they’ve longed for after facing infertility, medical complications, or loss. For LGBTQIA+ Intended Parents, it offers a beautiful and affirming way to grow a biological family—one built on love, intention, and equality.
At its heart, surrogacy is about trust, courage, and the unbreakable bond formed when two paths come together for one shared purpose: bringing a new life into the world.
Who Are Surrogates, really?
They are nurses, teachers, military spouses, stay-at-home moms. They are women of empathy, courage, and strength. They are people who know the power of family and want others to experience that same love.
They are not doing this for money. They are doing this with heart.
The Heart of Surrogacy: A Profound Desire to Help
Ask nearly any Surrogate why she chose this path, and chances are she’ll tell you about:
A friend or family member who struggled with infertility
Her own joy in motherhood and the desire to help others feel that joy
A calling to do something meaningful — something that changes lives
These are not stories rooted in profit. They are grounded in compassion. Many Surrogates describe a spiritual or emotional fulfillment that comes from helping someone build a family. For them, it’s an act of generosity — a gift that goes far beyond financial value.
Financial Compensation Is Real — But It’s Not the Motivation
Of course, Surrogates are compensated for their time, effort, and the physical demands of pregnancy. That’s fair and necessary. But payment is not why they do it — it's what allows them to do it without putting their families at financial risk.
In fact, many of the women who choose to become Surrogates already have stable careers or are stay-at-home moms with supportive families. They weigh this decision carefully, often discussing it in-depth with their spouses, children, and support systems. It’s never an impulsive choice — and rarely a financially desperate one.
The Emotional Journey: Bonding, Empathy, and Legacy
Surrogacy is not an easy road. From hormone injections to doctor’s visits, from the physical and emotional toll of pregnancy to the bittersweet moment of delivery — Surrogates go through an intense, life-changing experience. And they do it with love.
Most Surrogates report a strong emotional bond not with the baby, but with the Intended Parents. They feel joy when those parents hear the heartbeat for the first time, when they cry during the gender reveal, when they hold their child at last.
Many Surrogates stay in touch with the families they help, forming lifelong friendships. They often say: “I didn’t just give someone a baby — I gave them the rest of their life.”

How we support our Surrogates during their journey.
ACRC Global offers a comprehensive support system for surrogates, ensuring they are cared for emotionally, practically, and socially throughout their journey. Each surrogate is paired with a dedicated case manager who provides personalized assistance, from coordinating appointments to offering emotional support, making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. To further support emotional well-being, ACRC partners with Embra Health to provide psychological evaluations and tailored therapy sessions, creating a safe space for surrogates to navigate any challenges that may arise. Beyond medical and emotional support, ACRC fosters a sense of community through local meetups, virtual gatherings, and signature surrogate retreats, allowing surrogates to connect, share experiences, and feel celebrated.
Final Thoughts
Surrogacy is one of the most selfless acts a person can undertake. Reducing it to a financial transaction erases the emotional complexity, courage, and compassion that Surrogates bring to this journey.
If we truly want to honor these women, let’s tell the real story. Not the one shaped by stigma — but the one shaped by love.
