At ACRC Global, being matched with your surrogate marks an exciting milestone in your journey. But what happens after a surrogacy match? Whether you're a surrogate or an intended parent, knowing what to expect helps ensure a smooth path forward. Today, we share a Case Manager’s step-by-step guide for the important early stages after a match.
What happens after a surrogacy match?
Welcome and Orientation
Once the surrogacy match is confirmed, both the surrogate and intended parents receive a warm welcome from our Case Management Team. Surrogates are introduced to their support team, and intended parents receive a clear roadmap outlining the next steps.
Psychological Evaluation
The surrogate completes a psychological evaluation with a licensed mental health professional to ensure she is emotionally prepared for the surrogacy journey. This is often conducted virtually for convenience. Sometimes this is required for intended parents as well.
MFM (Maternal-Fetal Medicine) Evaluation (if needed)
Some IVF clinics may require a high-risk pregnancy assessment for the surrogate. We will provide the high-risk obstetric team with all of the surrogate’s pregnancy and IVF medical records (if applicable) and coordinate an appointment for the surrogate to consult with a third-party high-risk obstetrician (MFM). The high-risk obstetrician will prepare an assessment report based on the surrogate’s medical records and consultation results. This report will be sent to the IVF clinic for review.
IVF Clinic Medical Record Review
The IVF clinic reviews the surrogate’s medical history and pregnancy records to ensure she is medically suitable for the upcoming cycle. This record review typically takes up to two weeks depending on the IVF clinic’s schedule.
Surrogate Medical Screening
The surrogate attends an in-person medical screening at the IVF clinic. This comprehensive evaluation includes bloodwork, ultrasounds, infectious disease testing, and genetic carrier screening. The results typically takes about 1-2 weeks to complete after the screening.
Once the surrogate passes the screenings and medical clearance is received, we'll move into the legal contract phase — a crucial step where both sides work with independent attorneys to finalize legal agreements.
After legal clearance, the most exciting part begins: preparing for the Embryo Transfer!

Ask questions: Don’t hesitate to ask your care team if anything is unclear.

Tips for Intended Parents:
Be patient: Some steps take time, especially clinic record reviews and screening results.
Stay informed: Communicate regularly with your case manager for updates.
Be available: Some decisions may require your input; timely responses help keep things moving smoothly.
Prepare for legal phase: Once legal contract drafting begins, you can also start preparing your 2nd escrow funding to ensure smooth progress after legal is finalized.
